Traditional logs are still widely used for heating and are suitable for all manually-fed wood-burning appliances.

Different species of wood burn slightly differently which is significant in purchasing decisions. All woods burn better when well seasoned and all burn better when split.

Woods which tend to crackle and spark may not be suitable in an open grate but present no problem in a wood-burning stove where the firebox is enclosed.
